Our friend Jeff made us a fabulous (and beautifully designed), modern, matte black fire pit. That's where it all started. This incredible fire pit (featured in House and Home magazine) changed our relationship to being outdoors. It allowed us to get outside even on the coldest winter nights, in Canada. What a game changer!
People do better together.
Our fire pit allowed family, friends and neighbours to gather outside. Informal parties started around a warm fire, then blankets were added and lighting was hung. Warm beverages extended the evenings. And every time we gathered around this fire pit, people didn't want it to end. Our outdoor space became a central meeting place where incredible moments and memories with new and old friends were made. And it sparked a desire to celebrate outdoors in weather we never could have imagined.
DESIGN FIRST - IT'S HOW WE SEE THE WORLD.
We've always been design obsessed and we ran a creative agency before we launched Big Wide Outside. So, for us - great design (and high quality) comes before anything else. Inspired by the simple sophistication of Scandinavian and Japanese design, we push the boundaries between indoor and outdoor design by offering Canadians luxurious products that can be used anywhere in your home. We started with our Iconic firepit, graphic blankets and blackened charcuterie boards. Now we design home decor items, art objects and most recently we've joined up with like minded and design obsessed partners to add candlesticks, ceramics, muskoka chairs, portable lighting and bamboo dish ware.
Because of our muted tones and limited colour palettes and the way we combine both simple and bold patterns - everything we create goes together seamlessly.
